"Retiring Room," South Union, KY

A “retiring room” at South Union showing the patterned coverlets, typically woven by Shakers. While furnishings and clothing were generally plain and simple, the coverlets exhibit creativity and perhaps a bending of the rules that occurred as the Shakers migrated west. Note the communal space and the limited furniture. Pegs along the wall were used to hold personal garments as well as the lightweight but sturdy chairs to minimize clutter. Symmetry and order are also on prominent display.
