An emphasis on education is not unique to the Shakers, but studies did prepare youngsters (either orphans taken in by the community or children of converts) to participate in Shaker life. Sometimes separate schoolhouses were built, but this room seems to use built-in desks in an upstairs room of the Centre Family Dwelling (South Union).
